Yorkshire Sculpture Park

For those of you lucky enough to see the ceramic poppies made and displayed at the Tower of London last year to mark the century of the out break of war will know first hand just how impressive they are. Individually they look amazing but when displayed together create a beautiful scene.

If you didn’t manage to see the poppies at London never fear Yorkshire folk, the ceramic poppies have made their way to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and are being displayed in the poppy wave until the 10th January 2016.

It certainly is not to be missed and is a great addition to the YSP. I visited on a Sunday afternoon so naturally there was a fair amount of people but it wasn’t ridiculously busy, but if you can take advantage and go mid week I would. For more information on the poppies click here

The sculpture park itself is fantastic and free. You can park on a nearby road however the sculpture park offers parking, for all day it is £8 (the money goes towards the up keep of the park and its facilities). Just a tip if there is a queue for the pay and display machine you can pay for your parking up to 48 hours after your visit as it’s all done via your registration plate (So make sure you remember it when you get to the machine!)

The park itself is quite large and walking around the whole thing will certainly give you a great workout. You can walk by the lake and up the hill to take in the beautiful views of the surrounding area. The park is push chair and wheelchair friendly and there are a number of disabled car parks and shuttle buses to allow people to get around the park easier.

The park is dog friendly however they must be kept on a lead at all times and you are not allowed to enter the main cafe or nature reserve section but there is still plenty to see.

When we went we took a packed lunch and took advantage of the beautiful views as we ate lunch on the picnic benches. The cafe does offer some healthy option so no excuses not to eat healthy after your walk!

Although some of the sculptures left me slightly puzzled they certainly were impressive and well worth a look at … here is my favourite….. this hare definitely SQUATS!
