Ok ok ok – if you’ve read some of my previous blogs ever, you’ll know I think that EVERYONE should do yoga. However, with all this training I’m doing for my boxing match, the need to stretch is become more and more frequent. I find that yoga is a great way to facilitate that stretching process and whilst I find that yoga helps to stretch everything; my shoulders, rear delts, and lower back really feel the intense boxing training. There are some great yoga postures for boxers, but boxers probably don’t even realise it!
Obviously sequences such as the Sun Salutation work everything, but these particular postures are AMAZING so should be introduced into your stretch routine. PS you do not need to be flexible or bendy for these stretches!
- The Arms part of the Eagle Pose

If you’re great at balance and co-ordination, there’s no reason why you can’t do the whole pose. But it’s the AMAZING shoulder and upper back/rear delt stretch that I love about this posture.
- The Dolphin Pose

A great arm lengthener and shoulder opening move. It’s also great for stretching the hamstrings so that’s an added bonus!
- Thread The Needle

It’s like an adapted child’s pose so it’s not only great for the lower back but also means that the shoulders get a great stretch.
So, get cracking with these yoga postures for boxers…..don’t mock them until you try them!
