What is CPD I hear you ask. CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development and it is a common necessity within many professions. It consists of “the maintenance and development of the knowledge and skills needed to perform in a professional context” (CPD Standards Office, 2018). Basically it means that us, as professionals, need to make sure we actively fine-tune, develop, and update our skills and knowledge. This could focus on bettering our current skills as well as learning new ones.
In the world of sport, health, and fitness this is a very important responsibility. Taking Personal Training as an example, training methods and approaches are constantly changing. New research and evidence is always emerging, and although not all PTs are directly involved in research it is still important that they are aware of the current concepts and evidence. Our practice as health and fitness professionals needs to be evidence-based. If it is not how do we know what we are doing is a) effective and b) safe?
Why Should You Care?
To get the best results out of your Personal Training you need to be engaging in effective training programmes, exercises, and methods. If your PT does not keep up-to-date with their wider reading of the world of health, fitness, and exercise how can you be sure what he/she is doing is going to be the best and safest way of getting you your results? You can’t. To provide an analogy, would you go to a car showroom and ask for vehicle that was out-dated, ineffective, and possibly unsafe? I am guessing not. So why would you do this with your personal training? Just like cars, fitness and exercise has come a long way over the decades, so you need to find someone who will keep up-to-date, be well read on the subject, and provide you with the best opportunity to progress.
