Most of you will know that I started in the industry as a class instructor and then made the transition to a personal trainer. For some people, this represents a similar journey for themselves – they started going to fitness classes and realised that they wanted something more and transitioned to personal training. On the other hand, some of our clients start with personal training and then also go to our classes for an additional boost. And of course we can’t miss those people out who just simply prefer one over the other.
The thing is if you’re happy with what you’re doing in the gym, you may not consider trying a class or a personal training session. But as they both can compliment your training, it is worth looking at the pros and cons for both personal training vs classes.
Classes
PROS:
- They are a great way to supplement your existing exercise routine
- There’s a massive variety of classes suitable for all tastes and fitness levels
- Some classes can feel like a group training session which, for some, can be very motivating
- The class instructors provide motivation and exercise guidance
- Classes have a team spirited/energetic and social feel
- Makes fitness affordable and accessible in the example of community based or pay as you go classes
CONS:
- Cost – usually have to be a member of a gym to participate in group exercise classes
- Classes are not personalised, so may not be appropriate for specific goals
- Not all instructors are created equal
- Classes are on at set times as specified on a class timetable
- If you’re new to exercise or not self confident, classes full of people can be intimidating
Personal Training
PROS:
- Bespoke service specifically tailored to the individual and their goals
- Not just exercise driven. A good personal trainer should look at the whole package including nutrition and lifestyle to help you achieve your goals
- Flexibility in terms of timing and training location
- Client progression monitored and recorded
- Ongoing support – not just during the session
- Can train in a small group and still have set goals and targets
CONS:
- Cost – Personal training can range from £30 upwards for an hour.
- Not all trainers are created equal and not all trainers offer the same services
- Often have to be a member of the gym to have personal training (this is not the case for Motive8 North)
If you are looking for tailored, specific advice and your budget allows it, personal training is the better option to choose as this is focused around YOU and YOUR goals.
If this has got you interested in trying something new, whether it be personal training or classes, then why not speak with one of our trainers and we can give you some advice about what is best for you.
