Are Breakfast Biscuits Healthy?

Ooooh I’ve not had a good rant on my blog for a while so I thought I’d not disappoint and let of some steam this week :O)
I have two bug bears at the moment.
The first is the promotion of a certain popular diet whose current radio commercial is about chips being allowed on their diet. Whilst I’m all for balancing food with your lifestyle and even allowing a cheat meal every so often so you can go out and enjoy life and not feel like a slave to a diet I totally disagree with a diet which actively promotes eating chips! It saddens me that this company feels that they have to use tactics like this to attract people to follow their diet, surely this doesn’t educate people about permanently changing their diet and lifestyle. Why can’t they have 100% belief that following a healthy, clean diet with non of their processed pre-packaged foods will get results instead of almost giving people the excuse to eat ready meals, chips and cereal bars just because they have been endorsed by them!
So on that subject, cereal bars and breakfast biscuits……yes I know they are quick and easy to grab instead of making breakfast but seriously if you don’t have time get up early and make some scrambled eggs or a bowl of porridge on a morning then something is wrong! Make breakfast a priority and get up 10 minutes earlier each day.
I’ve just looked at the nutritional content for a well known breakfast biscuit who have just brought out some exciting new flavours some which include chocolate and berries. Again, another company who feels they have to appeal to mass market by adding unhealthy ingredients like chocolate to a food! So, here are my other views….
Good:
– Contains some slow release carbs (but also a lot of sugar)
Bad:
– 2 biscuits contain 200 calories (not bad we hear you cry!) but 60 of these calories are from fat!! So a third of the calories you eat are from fat! You would be better having some good fats from foods like avocado or salmon with your breakfast.
– 32g of carbs but 10g of this are which sugars which I think is quite high.
– The ingredients list is as long as my arm which I think tells you a lot about a product. The more ingredients, the better it is to avoid!
So, the next time you are in the supermarket, avoid the cereal bars and breakfast biscuits and choose healthier breakfasts so as:
– Scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and mushrooms
– Poached eggs and spinach
– Porridge
– Own home made granola using nuts, seeds and a small amount of honey and oats. No added sugars or fruit in sight!
– Chicken and veg (who said a meal like this should be reserved for your evening meal!)
– Vegetable omelette
These breakfasts will be so much better for you and definitely keep you feeling full until lunch!
