Personal Trainer

Hopefully this won’t be too morbid – but I thought it may be nice for my last blog to be a little bit about my time here as a Personal Trainer at motive8 – as well as a little thankyou to the members, classes, my clients, my fellow PTs and most importantly Jenny. I believe my first day (not counting work experience) was December the 2nd 2016 (gym hours), my first client was Joel (sorry mate!) and my first class was a lunch time HIIT class where only Richard Breakspeare turned up – sorry Rich!!

In The Beginning:

I remember everything being very daunting. Everyone seemed like they had been friends outside of the gym/personal training for years – saying hello to people seemed more than just the niceties. In terms of training clients and classes, I had probably underestimated how much of personal training was ‘personal’ and not just ‘training’. God only knows what my first couple of months training clients and classes was like; but I am pretty sure I had to learn how it worked very quickly!

18 Months Later:

Jumping forward nearly 18 months and I get why everyone seemed like they had a deeper relationship than just that of a gym member or client at ‘bog-standard’ gym. The studio is such a lovely place to work in, it is a cliché but, it really does have family feel on a day-to-day basis. Classes don’t feel like work at all, sometimes I probably spend too much time laughing and joking with the class members but hopefully it helps distract them from my brutal conditioning or strength session I have got them doing. Maybe if you ask some of them, they will give you a completely contradictory response (insert the ‘eyes’ emoji).

Although I have only worked at motive8 for around 18 months, which compared to Jenny and Kate is nothing; I still feel like I have managed to help my clients reach their long-term(ish) goals. I would be happy to sit here and list all of them and how well they have done, but I think the biggest compliment to them is how hard they have worked. Whether it has been planning nutrition, getting in an extra training session early on a morning or working on improving movement patterns in their own time – you guys have made my job so much easier, but most importantly so enjoyable! It’s down to you guys why you have reach those goals – keep going!!

Personally, much like personal training is not just training, I don’t believe work is just work – I believe in the big holistic package that goes along with that. Although I feel I have grown as a PT, I also think I have massively improved as a person. I mean if nothing else, I know exactly how to change the blue roll…….!! Again, I put that down the community/family feel around the studio and how interacting with clients and members is just as important as what you deliver in a PT session.

Probably the biggest compliment I can pay Jenny and everyone, is that when I graduated from University I had no thoughts of becoming or working as a personal trainer. However, now my biggest worry is that I won’t enjoy my future work as much as I have enjoy the last year and a half. Its been a pleasure folks….
