7 years at Motive8

I know that it’s hard to believe, but I’ve now spent 7 years at motive8! Have things changed since I joined back in 2012? Well, I’ve seen the team change, changed my hair colour a number of times, the gym got new flooring and kit, I got injured, had my teeth straightened, I’ve been involved in loads of charity work, put on some weight, made Assistant Manager and course tutor, I got (and am about to get) older… Nothing that you wouldn’t expect really! So why write a blog about it? Simply because I’ve been asked some questions about my time here…got to give the people what they want!

Have You Got/Had a Favourite Client?

Oooooo now – I’m not sure how to answer that question! Hahahah. There are clients who always stand out in my mind – either because of the way they smash their goals (or even because of what their goals are in the first place), or because of our banter, or because of the length of time I’ve trained them for. It wouldn’t be fair to say that I have “a” favourite. Is that a bit of a cop out? Probably!

Have You Changed Your Training Style?

My main goal has always been to ensure people enjoyed exercise. That will never change. But in terms of the style of training – in a way, you have to change. People’s goals are all different, and so too are the people! You have to learn to adapt! You learn (and have to learn) a lot of things doing the job. I hadn’t known about German Body Composition Training when I first started; and I’ve had some great results with this and weight loss clients. I’m now working with strength and hypertrophy clients, so again I’m learning to understand the programming requirements there. As with everything, there is always new research and new techniques out there, I’ve got a lot of additional qualifications to ensure that I keep up to date – I like to think that I use this with my clients.

What’s Kept You Here?

Without sounding like and advert for motive8 – it’s really down to two things: the people and the work. This gym has such a different approach to it’s members, staff and surrounding community – it’s simply awesome.  It’s great to have a gym where the staff know the gym members (by name!) and hold events for them; where the staff get on really well with each other (it’s devastating when people leave!); and where we have the flexibility to pursue other career avenues at the same time (I teach fitness classes and tutor massage). What’s not to love! This isn’t a 9-5 job, and I’m not saying it’s always easy, but it is rewarding!

And The Next 7 Years?

I still haven’t decided what I want to be when I grow up! So who knows……
