It’s the New Year, a time where many of us will make New year Resolutions. I’ll be honest, I don’t really make resolutions, I’m a reflective kinda girl the whole way through the year, so I’m always setting goals, reflecting on what I’ve done well, what I could do better, am I pushing myself enough, etc, etc.
It’s not that I’m against New Year Resolutions, but I do wonder how different the world and we would be if we didn’t have these traditions! However, as a personal trainer, I understand that resolutions motivate people and often lead to people achieving amazing things they never thought possible.
However, did you know that after 6 months only 46% of people in the UK are still actually sticking to their resolutions? So, how do you make a resolution a way of life (and not just for the New Year).
You
All of your goals should be centred around YOU and what YOU want. Not what your friends think you should do, look like. You will only achieve your goals if you are bought into them yourselves!
Self-Belief
You MUST believe you CAN achieve your goals. If you are already doubting that you will achieve them before you start then you’re more likely to give up when the first curve ball is thrown at you.
Commitment
Goals aren’t always easy to achieve, if they were we would all be smashing our goals every day, and quite frankly, I’d be out of a job as a personal trainer. They take commitment and dedication – make sure you know 100% what is needed to achieve your goal and then give 100% effort to achieving this.
Realistic
Goals need to be realistic, a bit like the point about self-belief above. If you set pie-in-the-sky goals, which deep down you know you can’t achieve in the time frame then you’re setting your self up for failure. Be realistic not only about your goals but the time frame needed to achieve them.
Share
Share your goals with friends and family, tell them how important it is to you to achieve your goal, get them onside and support you. Anyone who doesn’t….then are they really a friend? If they know how important it is for you to achieve your goal then they will back you 100%.
Plan
To achieve your goals you must be a good girl/boy scout and be prepared. If it’s a health and fitness goal, you need to fix your workouts in your diary, plan your meals in advance, etc. Preparation is key!
Hopefully these tips will help you achieve your New Year resolutions this year, but if you need some more inspiration then take a read of these blogs.
