My client and I were discussing this morning that when she went to Australia, avocados were everywhere – they were grown locally and in abundance. We started to think about what superfoods Spring brings us here in the UK which are good for us – and whether other people were aware of it!
So here’s a list of superfoods which should be able to buy now (or at the very least very soon), that has not been imported from sunnier climes. This list is not complete as there are soooo many things you can get fresh right now, but these are some of my favourites!
- Asparagus – full of B Vitamins and Vitamin K, fibre and protein
- Artichoke – a medium globe artichoke is reported to contain grams of Protein! It also contains vitamin C and is thought to aid digestion.
- Broccoli – for me personally the king of superfoods! Containing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory goodness alongside vitamin C, K and folate (essential for regulating cell growth)
- Chicory – containing vitamin A and C as well as iron, calcium and phosphorus.
- Fennel – a great addition to salads everywhere; fennel also contains lots of potassium as wells as folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin and vitamin C
- Rhubarb – get ready for those sugar free crumbles!
- Spring Greens – never underestimate the power of Dark Leafy Greens!
Ok so I know what you’re asking – why should I eat or even care about seasonal superfoods? Simply put:
- Better value for money – seasonal food should be cheaper than other imported foods
- Lower environmental impact – in season fruit and veg means less artificial inputs like heating, lighting, pesticides and fertilisers than at other times of the year.
- It should taste better – as it’s been ripened at source and harvested at the right time
- Supports British producers
- Gets a different type of variety of produce in your diet!
And how to tell what is and isn’t in season? Well here’s some handy links for you!
