So I have been given the challenge of giving you a bit of understanding behind ‘tea-toxing’ tea detoxing diets. You only have to watch TV, read a magazine or scroll down your social media to see that tea detoxing is the big new craze pushing juicing out of the top spot!
The idea behind tea-toxing it is that you have a morning ‘tea’ and an evening ‘tea’ and still eat normally. There are a number of brands available however they all claim to help you achieve the following:
• Lose weight
• Burn calories
• Boost metabolism
• Cleanse
• Detoxify
• Suppress appetite
• Increase energy levels
This is achieved by using 100% natural ingredients, which looking at the ingredients I agree there are no stated chemicals/added ingredients so I can argue with that.
The morning tea
This is a stimulant and gives you a steady and constant supply of energy throughout the day. It also increases your metabolism and aids with appetite suppression. I know from research and experience with weight loss clients that suppressing your appetite is not the answer! Your body needs food to fuel itself and get your metabolism going so the idea that it suppresses your appetite and increases your metabolism is a contradicting statement.
Evening Tea
This tea cleanses and detoxifies your body. It’s a colon cleanse that flushes out your digestive tract of toxins and unwanted excess which could be making it more difficult for you to lose weight. Our body is a very sophisticated system and eating a healthy diet with a good balance of protein, fibre and good fats should be sufficient to ensure you have a good bowel movement. This detox and flushing out they refer to could lead to dehydration the last thing you want to experience if your looking to lose weight. click here to read a blog about the negative effects of dehydration.
How Does Tea-toxing Work?
Be warned, during my research of these tea detoxes there has been a number of cases of the contraceptive pill not being as reliable due to the laxative effects! Also a lot of people have reported having loose bowels that certainly is not what you want day to day!
Lots of these detox diets are used over a 7, 14 or 28 day cycle of tea this certainly is not cheap for your pocket and my question is to you are you going to drink these teas for the rest of your life to maintain your weight loss?
The idea of loosing pounds and pounds in just a few days may be absolutely ideal, however the side-effects may be detrimental to your health and in many cases will result in you gaining weight once you stop the process. A good balance of exercise and healthy eating is going to be much more effective and sustainable.
