Calories In Easter Eggs… Surely One Won’t Hurt?

With Easter approaching it’s safe to say Easter eggs and chocolate treats are lining the shelves of all supermarkets, corner shops and petrol stations. For many people they see it as a time to treat themselves to an easter egg or two…..“it’s Easter after all” and if you have kids it’s often hard to resist the temptation of having a nibble at the kids Easter eggs. I am not writing this blog to be a scrooge but I know many of you will be shocked by just how many of your favourite Easter eggs could seriously effect your health and fitness goals. The calories in Easter eggs is quite phenomenal.
Below I have listed the most popular easter treats and their nutritional content as well as how much exercise you would need to do to burn off each one.
NOTE – The exercise just demonstrates how much exercise you would need to burn off the calories for each of these treats, it will not counterbalance the consequences of taking in high levels of saturated fats or sugars.
How many calories are burned during exercise?
How many calories burned during exercise completely depends on the individual, I would always recommend using a heart rate monitor that is programmes to your weight and height to get a more accurate reading however here are some rough guides
Running 1 mile = 100 calories
Burpees for 1 minute = 10 calories
Jump Lunges for 1 minute = 12 calories
Renegade Rows for 1 minute = 15 calories
Squat and Press for 1 minute = 14 calories

You would need to run 1.5 miles to burn off this little bunny or do 16 minutes of burpees
Cadbury’s Mini Eggs
Another popular favourite, even I was shocked at how much sugar was in each individual one.
Per Cadburys Mini Egg (3.3g)
Calories 16,Carbohydrate 2.2g of which sugars 2.19g, Protein 0.2g, Fat 0.7g,of which sat 0.45g
Eat 10 of these bad boys and you’re doing burpees for another 16 minutes or around 11 minutes of squat and press.
Lindt Chocolate Mini Eggs

Calories 30, Carbohydrate 2.3g of which sugars 2g, Protein 0.3g, Fat 2.3g of which saturates 1.7g

Cadbury Creme Egg
The most popular of Easter treats packs a high number of carbs and saturated fats so think before you add one to your shopping at the checkout.

Calories 180, Carbohydrate 28.5g, Protein 1.6g, Fat 6.3g of which sat 3.9g
Scoff this down and you might as well add another 2 mile run to your workout routine for the week.
Cadbury’s Buttons Easter Egg

Calories 858.6, Carbohydrate, 92.0g of which sugars 91.7g, Protein 12.2g, Fat 48.6g of which saturates 30.1g
Wow, eat all of this in one go and you’re going for a 8.5 mile run, and lets face it hundreds of burpees!

This has a very alarmingly high level of sugars and saturated fats

So there we have it… the truth about the calories in Easter eggs. I may have ruined Easter but you certainly will ruin your fitness goals if you over consume on these.
