What’s Your Motivation? Thoughts of a Personal Trainer

personal trainer motivation Many people think that as a personal trainer we are motivated all of the time to exercise and eat healthy. But…guess what….we are human…and that isn’t always the case.  There are times when it’s cold outside and we don’t want to go and do our hill sprints in the park, or we’ve had a long week with clients and our energy levels are low and the thought of lifting even a 1kg dumbbell fills us with dread! Don’t get me wrong, we still train and eat healthy as we know if we don’t we won’t achieve our goals, but what inspires us during when our motivation is low? Even personal trainers need inspiration!

My main inspiration is my personal training clients and our gym and class members who come and work hard at our personal training and exercise studios in Leeds. When my energy levels are low I think of how hard my clients work in their personal training sessions and that I wouldn’t let them give up so why should I?

I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but it’s the truth! As many people know I am a keen runner, and often when my lungs feel like they are going to burst out of my chest and my legs feel like lead on those last few hill sprints I think of which personal training clients I have put through their paces that day and use them as inspiration.  The personal training client who put their every last bit of energy into the last 100m of their last interval on the rowing machine. The personal training client who got a pb on their deadlift in the gym…..and that makes me dig deep and work hard.

Many of our personal training clients in Leeds have busy family lifes, work long hours yet they still commit to fitting in their training sessions so it should be no different for me. And the key word for this point is commitment.

You can be motivated to achieve something but without commitment you will never achieve your goals. Commitment and motivation are two very different things…you might desire to achieve a particular goal but are you actually prepared to give everything you need to achieve those results? Get up when it’s cold and dark? Train late on a night? Substitute those chips for a side salad and veg? Whatever you need to do, in the words of Nike, Just do it! Chris Baird, our Master Personal Trainer, Leeds recently wrote a great blog about Commitment vs Motivation so have a read. http://www.m8north.co.uk/blog/motivation-and-commitment-what-it-takes-to-achieve-your-goals/

And my final reason to why I fit my training sessions in week in week out…..I WANT to achieve my goals and my goals are IMPORTANT to me. If I want to become a faster and stronger runner then I need to do my tempo runs, interval training and strength training in the gym. Unfortunately there are no fairies who will come and wave a magic wand and I’ll wake up and be able to run faster. I need to follow a specific training plan to do this. If you’re goals aren’t important to you it’s easy to wuss out of that training session and put it off to tomorrow.

If you find you’re committed and motivated to train but not achieving your goals then maybe you’re not doing the right things in the gym, speak to one of the motive8 personal trainers Leeds and they will be able to help!

It’s often hard to stay motivated 100% of the time, but on those days when you would rather poke your own eyeballs out than have a workout think of someone who inspires you and use that as your motivation! Ultimately though, you should be your own inspiration. Remind yourself of why you started your fitness journey, the benefits you already feel from being more active and healthier and then remind yourself about what you need to do to continue seeing a change and achieve your goals….you will only achieve these goals if you are prepared to make a change. And if all else fails, give the motive8 team of personal trainers Leeds a call and we will give you some friendly words of motivation!
